Pilot Program “Pups on the Pops” Begins on Three Ski Trails at Echo Ridge

News Release Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest 215 Melody Lane, Wenatchee, WA  98801    •     509-664-9200  •   www.fs.usda.gov/okawen Contact:  Resource Assistant Paul Willard, 509-682-4900 Date:  February 3, 2015 – 2:50 p.m. Chelan–Beginning February 7, the Chelan Ranger District will be implementing a pilot program specifically for Nordic skiers and dogs called “Pups on the Pops” on three trails locally known as the “Pops” at Echo Ridge Nordic Ski Area.  The program will be based out of the Lower Echo Parking lot and provide skiers and dogs access to three connected trails–Lolly Pop, Tootsy Roll and Whoop-Di-Do.  Total trail distance is 3.7 kilometers on easy rated trails.   The intent of the pilot program is to meet the demand for dog-friendly ski trails, along with the existing skiing use.  “There is high demand for easy ski loop trails that are also dog-friendly because our existing dog-friendly trails are rated most difficult,” said Chelan Ranger District Recreation Program Manager Paul Willard.  . “It is often a balancing act to meet the desires of a variety of skiers.  In order for the program to succeed, dog owners will need to be respectful of other skiers, responsible for controlling their dogs and keeping the trails clean,” Willard said.  “We are excited to offer this opportunity at Echo Ridge as the Forest Service has successfully implemented dog/ski trail programs similar to this across the nation.”  . The Echo Ridge Ski Loppet Saturday January 10th

2015 Echo-Loppet – January 10th, 2015 This year, the Loppet will be a  “Grass Roots” event with two primary objectives. Promote the Echo Ridge Nordic Trail System to surrounding communities and encourage families within the Chelan area to come up and ski. There will be 3 loops to choose from (Novice – Lollie-Pop Loppet 4K, Best Echo Skate 13K, Best Echo Classic 10 K) or complete all with connector trails for the 30 K Echo-athon. There are two times for the kid’s ski to accommodate basketball games in the morning. Come up and enjoy our cozy yurt and outstanding trail grooming. The club is committed to keeping the entry fees to a reasonable price ($20/adult plus $10 ski pass for non-season pass holders, kids are free and do not require a pass).
